Age of Empires III Editor's Review
An engaging real time military strategy game steeped in history and a great addition to the series.
Ensemble Studios created a visually stunning sequel with Age of Empires III, moving their military strategy series on a few centuries from Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, with battles heated up by the invention and widespread use of gunpowder. Despite some minor flaws, it is an interesting and challenging instalment in the popular genre shaping franchise. Staying true to the established formula, Age of Empires III contains some exciting additions.
Gamers take control of the British, French, Russian, Ottoman, German, Portuguese, Dutch or Spanish empire and wage war against the other powers while striving to increase their colonial might by conquering the New World of North and South America. It is a genuine thrill to lead your army as Napoleon Bonaparte, Frederick the Great or Ivan the Terrible and history buffs will be in their element.
Age of Empires III is brimming with features. It includes a three act one player campaign, a skirmish mode versus the computer with five varying difficulty levels, a network play mode and an ESOnline player matching service that enables players to chat with friends and foes. A scenario editor enables players with a creative itch to devise their own maps and campaigns.
Similar to its predecessor in its mix of economy building and military strategy, a slight repetitiveness due to the similarity of the featured nations in battle and the tendency for large conflicts to become confusingly chaotic are the only real game flaws.
Pro's: Beautiful looking real time strategy game that presents a stern challenge and the best kind of history lesson.
Con's: Now and then things get a little crowded on screen and battles can get repetitive due to the similarity of the weapons used by all armies in the epoch.
Conclusion: Age of Empires III sticks to the same formula but it is a winning one that set the template for so many other games of the same ilk. The conquest of the New World using trading relationships with Native Americans is a novel twist and imperialist expansion has never been so much fun.
